Globalisation and skill‐biased technological change (hereafter, SBTC) have emerged as alternative explanations for the increase in US wage inequality since 1980. Relatively little attention has been devoted to the effects of these shocks on unemployment across skill classes. We investigate this issue in this paper.

Although there is a plethora of literature that supports the existence of a technological bias in the US and Europe, exploring such a subject in the developing countries to a rise in earnings inequality—has become known as the Skill-Biased Technical Change (SBTC) hypothesis. In this article, we review the evidence in favor of the SBTC hypothesis, paying particular attention to the implications of SBTC for economy-wide trends in wage inequality and for the evolution of relative wages among different groups.
