Abstract. Gerard De Geer was the first one to identify De Geer-moraines, and has since then been mapped by many other studies around the world. The focus of this study was to examine the environment the ridges form in, regarding the water depth during creation, the importance of topography and the melting rate of the ice.

Well‐stratified glaciofluvial material is commonly found in the core of the moraines, whereas till or glacial De Geer moraines are ridges up to 5 m high, 10-50 m wide, and in some cases 1000 m or more in length. The moraines occur in large groups at 40-300 m intervals, mostly in low-lying landscape areas.

These stringy little moraines are generally assumed to form parallel to the retreating ice front -- but some way up-glacier from the ice edge -- in conditions where the bed material is saturated and where the ice is almost being lifted off the bed in a lake or marine environment. The mapped pattern of moraines implies that, shortly after the last maximum glaciation, the tidewater ice sheet began to retreat north from German Bank, forming De Geer moraines at the grounding line with at least one glacial re‐advance during the general retreat. De Geer moraines on German Bank, southern Scotian Shelf of Atlantic Canada. Numerous regularly spaced, parallel, linear to curvilinear ridges of sediment are recognized to form at or close to the grounding lines of water-terminating glaciers ( Lindén & Möller 2005 ). These ice-flow transverse ridges, sometimes known as De Geer moraines ( De Geer 1889 ), have modest heights and widths and variable lengths. While De Geer moraines are widely recognized as products of ice recession in glaciomarine settings, their formative processes remain debated.

De Geer moraines (DGMs) are small ridges that were formed at the grounding line during ice retreat by glaciers whose margins terminated in water. They are

de Geer moraine A type of moraine landscape that consists of a series of separate, narrow ridges trending parallel to a former ice front, and which can form annually. The ridges may be up to 300 m apart and up to 15 m high. Each ridge consists typically of a till core, capped by a layer of partly rounded boulders.
